Medical Assistant

Did you know that Highland Community College offers a Medical Assistant Program FREE for high school juniors and seniors at their Western Center? This program is offered free through an initiative called Excel in Career and Technical Education. For high school students, the program requires in-person attendance half days Monday - Friday from 12:00-3:07pm during the junior and/or senior years at the Western Center in Baileyville, KS. Transportation for USD 113 students is provided to and from the HCC Western Center. Classes start August 22, 2022. If USD 113 students are interested in the program, please visit with Briana Evans, SHS & WHS school counselor or Deb Ronnebaum, Axtell Career Coordinator, about how these credits can apply to high school graduation requirements.

The Medical Assistant training program teaches clinical and administrative skills including the following: obtaining patient histories and vital signs, performing phlebotomy and EKG's, administering injections, applying bandages, records management and insurance processing and billing. After completion of the program, students have the option to take the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) exam. Passing the RMA exam gives the opportunity for a rewarding job in the medical field. The Sabetha Community Hospital values this program and has job opportunities available for this profession. The hospital has had the privilege of assisting several Highland students with their externship and has provided employment for students.
